Host plants:
The caterpillar lives on Tamarix species (tamarisk).
Habitat:
Eupithecia ultimaria colonized dune terrain, river valleys, dry river beds, oases, ravines and sometimes gardens with the larval host plant.
Life cycle:
The moths fly in Europe apparently in two generations: late March to June and September to early November. Farther south, a continuous development would presumably prevail. I found numerous caterpillars in February 2011 in Fuerteventura at Tamarix canariensis in dry river beds (barrancos), e.g. near Ajui.
Remarks:
Eupithecia ultimaria is distributed from Fuerteventura across North Africa to Iran. In Europe it is found in the southeastern half of the Iberian Peninsula, on the French Atlantic coast to Brittany, the Channel Islands and very locally in southern England. The moth is also found on the southern French Mediterranean coast, locally in western and Southern Italy and Southern Greece.
