Host plants:
The caterpillar lives on the flowers of Valeriana species (valerian).
Habitat:
Eupithecia valerianata inhabits ditch edges, wet meadows, forest edges and other locations with Valeriana species.
Life cycle:
The pupa hibernates. The moths fly from mid or late May to July (August). The caterpillars live from late June through August and can be tapped.
Endangerment factors:
Eupithecia valerianata is in decline in some places, but is not yet seriously threatened.
Remarks:
The distribution extends from England and France across Central Europe to Russia and Iran.
