Host plants:
The larvae feed on Silene bupleuroides. I recorded eggs and young larvae only on that plant in SW-Bulgaria (Belasitza mountains).
Habitat:
Hadena drenowskii inhabits as a so-called xeromontane species most often nutrient-poor, dry and partially gappily vegetated mountain meadows, pastures or rocky slopes between 1000 and 2400m asl, but occurs locally (e.g. Ukraine) also in lowland steppes.
Life cycle:
The adults occur between July and August, rarely already in late June. The larvae live then until late September and the pupa is supposed to hibernate as it is the case with its congeners.
Remarks:
Hadena drenowskii occurs in Southeastern Europe in the southern Balkans (especially in Albania, Macedonia, S-Serbia, Bulgaria and north and Central Greece) as well as in the Ukraine. Further it is recorded from Asia Minor to Central Asia (e.g. Iran).
Hints on determination:
Hadena drenowskii is much larger than the related species (even H. caesia).
