Host plants:
The caterpillar feeds on Quercus. Primarily it is observed on Quercus coccifera.
Habitat:
Catocala eutychea inhabits sparse forests in the Mediterranean zone, maquis and other shrub-rich habitats with Quercus coccifera. I found the caterpillar commonly in Samos from the coast to about 600m above sea level in early May 2009, and in May 2011 at Mount Olympus in 0 to 700m above sea level.
Life cycle:
The egg hibernates. The caterpillar lives from March to May. They hide during the day on the trunk or near the ground and are betrayed by defoliated shoots. The moths fly from mid or late May through August.
Remarks:
Catocala eutychea occurs in Europe only on the southern Balkans (southern Albania, southern Macedonia, southernmost Bulgaria, almost all of Greece, including most of the Greek islands). It also flies in Asia Minor and other parts of Western Asia.
