Host plants:
The larvae are polyphagous on herbs and sometimes bushes or Clematis vitalba.
Habitat:
Axylia putris inhabits more moist and not too warm habitats of all kinds, especially if there are groves included. I detected several caterpillars together with those of Trachea atriplicis on Polygonum hydropiper along trails in humid forests of the Upper Rhine Valley in Germany (late August and September 2012)
Life cycle:
The pupa hibernates. Axylia putris flies from May to early September in one or two generations, depending on the site.
Remarks:
Axylia putris is distributed from Morocco across large parts of Europe and Asia to Japan. It is quite common in Central Europe.
