Macaria alternata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Macaria alternata: Adult [S] Macaria alternata: Adult [S] Macaria alternata: Half-grown larva [M] Macaria alternata: Larva (dark form, there are also greenish individuals) [S]

Host plants:
The caterpillar lives quite polyphagous on deciduous woods (Salix, Rhamnus, Betula, etc.), but it seems to prefer Prunus spinosa.

Habitat:
Macaria alternata inhabits forest edges and clearings, scrub and hedgerows of all kinds.

Life cycle:
The pupa hibernates and the moths fly in mostly two overlapping generations from late April to late August. I tapped the caterpillar in early August in the Swabian Jura from blackthorn.

Remarks:
Macaria alternata is widespread in Europe and temperate Asia.
