Host plants:
The caterpillars feed on Salix and more rarely also Populus species (both Salicaceae).
Habitat:
Smerinthus caecus occurs in the boreal woodland zone and is there especially found in wetlands or along rivers.
Life cycle:
The pupa hibernates. The moths are on the wing from late May to July. The larvae should be found between July and early September.
Remarks:
The eastern species occurs in Europe only in Russia and is found to the west about to the border of Belarus. Additionally, Smerinthus caecus is distributed in vast areas of the boreal zone in Siberia, to the east to northern China and northern Japan.
