Host plants:
The larvae usually feed on Arbutus unedo and consume the young leaves. More rarely also other plants like Coriaria myrtifolia are used.
Habitat:
Callophrys avis inhabits maquis, garigues and open woodlands with the host plant.
Life cycle:
The pupa hibernates in the litter (dead leaves etc.). The adults appear in spring between most often late March and early May. The larvae develop between late April and early June. They can be beaten from the host plants.
Remarks:
Callophrys avis occurs from NW-Africa locally across the Iberian Peninsula (especially Portugal, SW-Spain and Catalonia) to southern France (e.g. Var).
Hints on determination:
Callophrys avis is best distinguished by the yellowish to reddish-brown and not white (C. rubi!) eye ring.
